Special Needs & Hospital Dentistry

Special Needs Patients

Our pediatric specialists are experienced in helping patients with special needs maintain oral health. Patients with Down’s Syndrome, Cerebral Palsy, or other medical conditions, may have dental, behavioral, or restorative needs which may require additional attention and specialized care. Our team is experienced in helping these patients with their dental treatment in as comfortable and caring environment as possible. Please inform us if you have any questions or concerns regarding your special-needs child.

Hospital Dentistry

Most children can receive treatment in the typical office setting. However, some patients may benefit from dental treatment performed while under general anesthesia in a hospital setting. All of our Pediatric Dentists are on staff at Huntsville Hospital and are trained and experienced in accomplishing dental treatment on patients under general anesthesia.

It is sometimes necessary to complete dental treatment on children using general anesthesia. This is especially true when the child is very young and has a large amount of treatment. We also use general anesthesia for older patients who have a hard time cooperating in the normal dental setting. We do not do this on a whim. Often, treatment is first attempted in an office setting with or without sedative medications. However, if there is a lot of work to be done, the hospital is often the best way to safely accomplish treatment.
